Background:
The YouthWorks Career Fair is a feature of Baltimore City’s YouthWorks summer jobs program, which provides six-week employment opportunities for Baltimore City youth. In 2008, 6,500 teens participated in YouthWorks. Despite the struggling national economy, Mayor Sheila Dixon has vowed to maintain the goal of 6,500 for 2009. The YouthWorks campaign is still ongoing, accepting financial contributions and pledges to hire youth directly.

Long time YouthWorks supporters, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System and The Johns Hopkins University, continue to recognize the importance of summer jobs for teens, and Presidents Ronald R. Peterson (JHH) and Ronald J. Daniels (JHU) will present a donation to fund 250 jobs at the 12:30 p.m. press conference.

The YouthWorks Career Fair gives more than 60 employers the chance to meet and interview a select group of more than 500 older youth (16-21) who have completed a 12-hour job readiness training. Private sector companies, city and state agencies, and nonprofit organizations will interview throughout the day.

Employers who did not register to attend the career fair, but are interested in hiring YouthWorks participants, can still have their employment needs met in time for the summer jobs program – June 22, 2009 through July 31, 2009 – by contacting the YouthWorks office at 410-396-6722.

Those interested in supporting YouthWorks can make tax-deductible donations to:
