Meet Tyrone

Meet Tyrone ImageWorkforce Challenge

Tyrone Turner, a junior at Baltimore's Dunbar High in 2010, needed a summer job. His school is a health professions high school, and his career goal is radiology, so he wanted a summer job in that field, and he had the appropriate academic background.

Workforce Solution

Mr. Turner learned about the Baltimore Mayor's Office of Employment Development's YouthWorks program from his counselors and teachers at Dunbar High School. YouthWorks staff helped him develop a resume and prepare for interviews. They arranged for him to interview at Sinai Hospital, in the Emergency Room Radiology Department. He was hired for the summer.

Outcomes & Benefits

Mr. Turner spent the summer taking patients for x-rays, assisting patients who couldn't be moved with portable x-rays, and generally keeping patients comfortable. His boss recommended him to attend clinical grand rounds with staff, an honor reserved for "star performers" among the students. Staff, retired nurse volunteers, other older volunteers -- and even a patient -- praised Mr. Turner's work. The hands-on experience served to confirm his career goals.
