Workforce Challenge 

After becoming a single mother at the age of 16 in 2004, Rachel Johnson decided to drop out of the tenth grade and work full‐time in order to support her child. But when she had a second baby a few years later, Rachel realized she wanted more for herself and her family.  She knew her career options were limited without a high school diploma, and she felt that her children deserved better.

Workforce Solution

In October 2009, Rachel enrolled in the Baltimore City Career Academy where, as a part of the Diploma Plus program, she worked hard to accomplish her goals. Within in four months, she successfully completed all of her graduation requirements, enrolled in Baltimore City Community College (BCCC), and started an internship. Rachel began her classes at BCCC in the fall of 2010, and is expecting to graduate with an associate degree in nursing in 2012. While going to school, she is doing work‐study at BCCC.

Outcomes & Benefits

After earning her associate degree, Rachel plans to continue her education at Coppin State University where she has her sights set on a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
