YouthWorks Summer Jobs Program to Benefit From Financial Literacy Grant Mayor Rawlings-Blake to accept $4,000 check from National DollarWI$E Campaign Baltimore, Maryland (June 9, 2011)

WHAT: Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will formally accept a $4,000 grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors DollarWI$E program to help fund the financial literacy component of Baltimore City’s YouthWorks summer jobs program. YouthWorks 2011 participants, ages 14 to 21, will receive financial literacy education. Pratt St., Baltimore, 443-573-8700. BACKGROUND: The goal of the DollarWI$E Campaign is to incorporate financial education into every summer youth job in the country. In Baltimore, the DollarWI$E funds will be used to provide all YouthWorks worksite supervisors with training so that they can infuse a financial literacy curriculum into each participant’s summer work experience. Students will be encouraged to open checking and savings accounts, and incentives will be awarded to all YouthWorks participants who save $100 or more by the end of the program. The six-week, 25-hour per week YouthWorks summer jobs program is operated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development. The 2011 YouthWorks program will run June 27 through August 5. After showing valid, current identification on site, working press representatives must pick up meeting credentials in the press room of the Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel. ### In fiscal year 2010, the Mayor's Office of Employment Development served more than 23,000 city residents through our Career Center Network, placed more than 2,700 individuals in jobs, facilitated nearly 17,000 computer literacy training visits at our Digital Learning Labs, provided summer work opportunities to more than 5,100 youth, assisted more than 400 businesses through our Employ Baltimore strategy, and offered information, services and referrals to more than 4,000 displaced workers.
